Inyene Agro Hosts IITA On Improved Cassava Stems

Inyene Agro led by Miss Blessing Akpan (Managing Director) hosted International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) research team in Akwa Ibom State.

We had the privilege of being part of the 5 states in Nigeria mapped out by IITA to carry out a  research on Cassava and the challenges cassava farmers face in cultivating the food we consume, 

The research team was led by Dr. Collins  who came in from Germany to capture this problem in Nigeria , the research required a total of 40 cassava farmers, 8 farmers from 5 communities to particpate, the selected communities were: Oniong-Iman village, Ikot Ebo, Etinan Town, Ika LGA (coordinated by Mrs Rosemary Imo-Abasi Jacob) and Ikot Ekpene LGA (Coordinated by Hon Joseph Ema)  personnel from Ministry of Agriculture represented by Mrs Precious Edet (PRS), Development Finance Office, represented by Mr Desmond Ushie, NIRSAL represent by Mr Udeme, Director of Agricultural Investment represented by Mrs Christie and Retired Director  of Ministry of Agriculture  Mr Emmanuel Akpan sat to discussed on the current challenges faced by cassava farmers in the state and the role the play in helping farmers navigate through the problem.

Miss Blessing Akpan the Managing Director of Inyene Agro  who is the contact person for IITA tasked to coordinate the research team activities during their 3 days work was also given 5 newly released cassava cutting varieties from IITA  Head Quarter Ibadan for multiplication purpose in Akwa Ibom State,  so farmers can easily have access to purchasing the cutting once its ready in Akwa Ibom State, saving them logistic cost of travelling or ordering from Ibadan, the new cuttings are called Obasanjo 2, Dixon, Game changer, Farmer’s pride and Baba 70, the generic name are also communicated to Inyene Agro,

The research data captured by IITA team will be used to develop further solution and recommendations to the Government both Federal and State for identified cassava farmers problem in Nigeria,

You can’t change what you don’t know, farmers are losing 40% of their harvest, high price of food in the market, hunger is killing more people than malaria, food security can only be achieved when we know where to curb the loss.
