President of NIQS charges Quantity Surveyors to take the 2-day national workshop seriously

The two – day national workshop for Quantity Surveyors in the South South geo political zone of Nigeria has been rounded off with a charge on participants to take the workshop seriously.
The charge was dropped by the President, Nigerian institute of Quantity Surveyors, QS M. Abba Tor, FNIQS in an address presented during the opening ceremony of the workshop held at the ultramodern Ibom e – library, Uyo, capital of Akwa Ibom state on June 2nd 2021.
Represented by the national treasurer of the institute, QS Osaretin Okoro, FNIQS, the President identified inability to know exact materials, labor and plant required for projects of lower size and complexity handled by most of his members, especially in the informal sector of the built industry as a serious challenge, noting that sometimes this causes them not to optimize their profit, hence reason for lamentation.
“Most participants handling projects of lower size and complexity lament about the pains of identifying and analysing actual resources ( materials, labor and plant) required for their projects ,” he stated.
Speaking further on the theme of the workshop, “Importance of resource schedule for inclusive development of the construction industry”, the president said the theme was chosen to conclusively address and resolve such challenges as forestated.
According to him, “deploying resource schedule tool as a regular component of Quantity Surveying service offerings will ensure proper planning and effective use of scarce resources by the clients.”
The president said the overall aim of the workshop is to train Quantity Surveyors in both government and private employ on how best to horn their practice and contribute sustainably to national growth and development.
He informed participants wanting to invest in agriculture that a technical paper/ presentation titled” financing the agricultural value chain”, would be done by Bank of Agriculture limited, adding those desirous to venture into Agriculture would find the presentation highly rewarding.
The number one Quantity Surveyor in Nigeria appreciated Akwa Ibom state Commissioner for special duties, Hon. Okpolulm Ette, the executive secretary, Akwa Ibom state bureau of public procurement and other high profile guests for attending the event.
Also on his appreciation list were the two past presidents, namely late QS E. C. Oforeh in whose tenure the Standard Method of Resource schedule 1 which forms the major instrument of the workshop was published.
While QS Husseini A. Dikko was appreciated for volunteering to be lead consultant for the workshop, in spite of his tight and busy schedule.
Speaking on personal capacity, the national treasurer commended Akwa Ibom state government for being the only state among the thirty six States and Federal Capital Territory to own a functional airline, adding “I got to this workshop on time courtesy of the airline”.
On his part, Hon. Okpolulm represented by his permanent secretary, Engr. Effiong Efiakedoho appreciated the national executive council of NIQS for the choice of Uyo as center for South South zone.
He advised Quantity Surveyors to adopt the policy of honesty in their dealings with the people as money has a limitation compared to be integrity.
Papers were presented by various renowned Quantity Surveyors on issues that were germane to their practice in a way that participants after the two days drilling, they all agreed it was worthwhile.
Some called for more of such workshop at regular intervals to keep them updated and no aper with their counterparts globally.
